Touch Typing benefits for Autistic children

Children and adults with ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorders) struggle with both verbal and non-verbal communication, which affects their ability to learn in a traditional teaching environment. Studies have shown that computer based learning and interaction is one way those with ASD can learn and interact. ASD has a tendency to affect sensory processing, which limits writing ability but allows for typing. We currently only teach in small groups which is ideal for all our children.

Increased Success Rates

We have a very high success rate with autistic students for the following reasons:

  • Each lesson has a defined structure and starting point. Autistic children like to know where to start, how long they have to work for, and when they have finished
  • It is totally predictable as it is the same format every time students enter the program
  • It has an immediate reward system at the completion of each lesson
  • Our typing games tap into the interactive aspect of the way students learn
  • Through our games, students increase hand eye coordination and muscle memory
  • Stimuli is restricted so that stress levels are reduced
  • Our program is flexible because the child can work at his own pace. They can select a different background colour if one does not suit them. They can choose to have the sound on or off or to lower the volume, as all autistic children have strong or even painful reactions to intensity of sound, light or colour to varying degrees
  • Autistic children need a multi-sensory approach to learning and the kinesthetic/visual/auditory nature of the program is of great value to our pupils. They receive information through various channels which improves learning
  • Most autistic pupils love computers and thus need no convincing to work on the  program. They relate very well to computers. A monitor has no emotions, no facial  expression to interpret and no body language to confuse the autistic person
  • Touch Typing 4 Life software and methodology evidences progress by the WPM score or the percentage score. This is important to some of the pupils and surprisingly sometimes not, as some prefer the reward system rather than the statistics
  • By giving autistic individuals power and scope, it helps to develop self-esteem and optimism about their own performance

My ‘domain’ and passion: providing advisory and consultancy services to individuals, businesses, schools and all levels of users of technologies, devices and applications, from all walks of life and levels of mastery! Developed a touch typing program to teach children and adults how to touch typing giving them a skill for life.

I love to share my interesting facts and discoveries on my journey into my world of  Typing, Technology and Education.

Over the years we have successfully implemented our unique touch typing program to more than 1250 students ranging in age, aptitude and ability. During our classes we  teach proper posture; wrist, hand and finger positioning; key stroke rhythm; and awareness of ergonomics as keys to proper touch typing, utilizing muscle memory.

Each individual student, regardless of age or ability, even in group settings, is provided a customized learning plan tuned to their physical stature, comfort level, and unique fine motor skills. We also inspire student comfort in working with a computer, its operating system, peripherals and programs.
